Cigar City: Calling All (Local Tampa Bay) Artists

So have you ever wanted to have your artwork show up on a craft beer label?  Maybe you fancy yourself the next Randy Mosher or Ralph Steadman.  If you were asked to create a label or logo for your favorite beer, what would you do?  Well, Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida is asking.  In partnership with Hampton Arts Management, Cigar City is holding a contest to design the label for their  Tocobaga Red Ale that is going to be released in bottles this year.  The winner not only gets the honor of having their artwork on the bottles, but they will also receive an award of $500 and a free case of Tocobaga!  Not too shabby.

Tocobaga Red Ale is a deep-colored amber ale with hop flavor and aromas dominating and a subtle caramel malt sweetness to balance in the finish. To date, this has only been available on draft, and it comes in at 7.2% ABV.  It is quickly becoming a favorite not only of regulars to the tasting room, but of the brewery staff as well. Tocobaga pours a slightly hazy reddish-amber color with an off-white head and great lacing. The aroma is amazing – hoppy and citrusy with tropical fruit notes like pineapple and hints of sweet caramel malt too. For a red ale, there is a surprising and delicious hop bitterness one would associate more with an IPA, almost West Coast style, but there is balance, too. The mouthfeel is excellent and very dry. I am not usually a big fan of red ales in general, but this is really, really good.

Label designs will be chosen by guest judge Todd Smith, Director of the Tampa Museum of Art. Decisions will be made based on general aesthetics, unique integration of descriptive elements of the beer into the graphic, and Tampa Bay historical or cultural influences.  The top ten entries will be exhibited in print from June 3, 2011 to July 10, 2011 at the Cigar City Brewing Tasting Room, and an Opening Reception will be held on June 3 from 7pm – 10pm. Selected works will also be featured on the Cigar City Brewing website.

Unfortunately for those not local, this contest is only open to those living or working in the Tampa Bay area (Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties).

Digital submission deadline is 5pm (EST) February 25, 2011
Mail submissions must be postmarked by February 18, 2011

How about either changing the title or taking this one down? My wife and several other commercial artists had it show up in their twitter accounts and got royally pissed off when they got to the END of the “article” and saw the disclaimer about this only open to Tampa residents. :|

    Cletus,
I concede your point, and I have made the update. Thanks for reading.
